What is Brainspotting Therapy?

Brainspotting is an innovative, mindfulness based brain/body therapy developed by Dr. David Grand, PhD. It has been researched that talk therapy alone, although very useful for some clients, does not serve to rewire the deeper part of the brain where trauma is stored. Brainspotting targets the neurological source of these difficulties, and allows stagnant memories, feelings, and neurological pathways to be accessed and processed much more quickly and deeply than other conventional therapeutic approaches. Because the mind and body are intimately connected, trauma and stress are often expressed in a physcial manner. As Brainspotting therapy progresses, physical pain is often relieved along with emotional suffering.

How Does Brainspotting Work?

Brainspotting uses the individual’s field of vision to identify where areas of the brain may be holding unprocessed information and energy. Once the “spot” is identified the therapist and client “ get out of the way” and allow the brain to do what a brain does best, process and download whatever comes up. This “draining” of outdated and undigested clutter in the brain allows this amazing organ to integrate and process information in a new way. This allows people to make new meaning of old events, and access more effective resources that work better in their current reality.

Brainspotting is safe, respectful, and highly attuned to both the relational process in the therapy as well as the neuro-biological activation that is taking place. Due to this high level of dual attunement, the client is supported at their own pace through the process, thus minimizing the likelihood of being re-traumatized by the experience or memories.

What Kind of Problems Can Brainspotting Treat?

Brainspotting can help with almost any psycho-social issue a person presents to the therapist. This would include a large range of conditions, including complex trauma, depression, anxiety, PTSD, addictions, eating disorders, performance enhancement (including sports, acting, public speaking, auditions/interviews), social phobias, and many more issues related to strong emotional triggers that impede optimal living.
